However, with the arrival of the Mercury Reference Pre-Amplifier and the Solis Power Amplifier, the Southend-on-Sea specialists have officially entered the "super-fi" stratosphere.

The Solis: A 25kg Powerhouse

The Solis is a "beast" in every sense of the word. Weighing in at nearly 25kg, its physical heft is a direct result of its massive dual-transformer power supply.  

Power Output: It delivers a staggering 168W per channel into 8Ω, nearly doubling to 305W into 4Ω.  

The Architecture: Under the hood, the Solis uses a "triple" high-current output stage featuring twelve Sanken 130W multi-emitter output transistors.  

The Sound: This isn't just raw power. The fully symmetrical discrete circuitry ensures a lower noise floor and incredible grip. In testing, it handles even the most "difficult" speakers with a sense of calm authority, providing a rhythmic drive that Rega fans will find instantly familiar but significantly more "physical."  

The Mercury: The Brains of the Operation

While the Solis provides the muscle, the Mercury Reference Pre-Amplifier provides the finesse. It is arguably Rega’s most complex electronic design to date.  

Digital Prowess: Unlike Rega’s older reference units, the Mercury embraces the digital age. It features a high-performance DAC with galvanically isolated USB, S/PDIF, and optical inputs.  

Precision Control: It utilizes the legendary Alps Blue Velvet RK27 motorized potentiometer—the same one found in the Osiris—but pairs it with a symmetrical common base driver stage to eliminate distortion. 

User Experience: For the first time, we see a full-color IPS LCD display on a Rega flagship, making it much easier to navigate inputs from across the room. It also comes with the custom backlit Orbit remote, a beautifully machined tool that feels as premium as the sound it controls.

When paired, the Mercury and Solis create a "matched system" synergy. The Mercury’s balanced XLR outputs feed directly into the Solis’s symmetrical input stage, creating a signal path that is remarkably pure.
